style motif

As you may have noticed I have fallen somewhat out of love with this blog.  I took a really intense marketing class where I quickly realized how little I knew about fashion/blogging/branding and found my time better spent reading what others had to say.

Now, several months later, although still a baby  symbiont to this giant all-encompassing organism, I have a rather strong urge to take a piece for myself, and as they say, “put myself out there.”

So I’ve re-formated, re-branded and now am re-blogging.

Check out the new digs here. Follow me. Comment. Tell me what’s working, and what’s not. Prefer me here? Let me know.

Meg

Hippie Babble,

As you may or may not have noticed, it has been a while since I’ve written a post. A good long while. I’ve enjoyed the break. That is not to say I didn’t enjoy my previous musings. To the contrary, I have quite missed my interwebular wanderings.  But as a student and as a resident of a new city ( I still consider myself “new” to Vancouver), I find myself changing at quite a rapid rate. I’m highly and deeply affected by influences that surround me and as such my time is easily swayed from one curiosity to another.  Last quarter was all about marketing, media, and self promotion;  a format I found quite conducive to self-expression via social media.  Now in my third quarter and deep into design, my best creativity, although  still flowing from my finger tips, manifest in the slightly more concrete form  of physical garments.

In fact I completed my first construction project, a skirt.  To which I have received  praise from both teachers and peers.

Oddly though, this is not quite where my mind rests on this day of expression.  Lately I’ve felt a certain stirring, a subtle brewing of emotion. Certainly not unfamiliar  this sneaking little inkling knows the precise way into the seat of my mind.

ADVENTURE

FREEDOM

Time seems to be ticking away.  School is rushing past., and before I know it I’ll be long on the road to stability.  My youth angsts to be released. One last summer?

Maybe.

I’m looking into it.

Right. So I know I said I was too busy to write, but to be honest,

part of my homework is staying current with trends

aka, scouring fashion week photos. And hey, what’s a girl to do when she’s legitimately inspired (and three glasses of wine in)?

There has been big talk of prints for the next two seasons of fashion (including this upcoming spring!) and although I’ve long  been known for my palette of grey on grey with splash of navy, there have  been a few recent instances where  I’ve become weak in  my knees by the onslaught of colour.

More than likely in-coincidentally, the best and the boldest of these prints have reminded me of two of my wonderful friends who haven’t feared colour the way I have in the past.  [Can you guess who??????]

Collection Number one: SUNO.

A NY brand inspired by Kenyan collected fabric, founded by Max Osterweis.

This skirt is amazing, I would kill for that jacket, and I love the contrast with the red shoes

The Kenyan inspired print along the hem of this top is incredible.

How much fun would I have in this dress!??

My pic of the collection. What I WOULDN'T do for this dress. YIKES!

And my second selection, although equally precious in prints, from a slightly softer inspiration. (HINT: she enjoys sunshine, birds that sing, and all things lovely)

Although the designer behind this collection is much more recognizable, the prints are inconceivable.  Enjoy.

Anna Sui:

This. Is. Beautiful. The mixed prints, texture, elements. So interesting.

Who doesn't love a mountainous backdrop for their winter vacation?

Matronly chic (note the texture on texture with the tights - love it)

The knitwear over the blouse is great - and unexpected.

Ok this one is less for my friend, and more for me. How could I resist?

back to the laboratory

School is picking up and I’ve been taking on more shifts with work, so unfortunately  time dedicated to my love of the written word will have to go on hiatus.

I plan to be back with a new furry mid March, at the latest.

Alexander McQueen Spring 2010

The past eight months appear to be latent with the departure of iconic legends.  From the King of Pop to fallen Angels and blonde bombshells with whom we grew up, it seems the celebrities we so admire are slowly passing before us.  Nothing however, struck me so hard, so real, as the news that brought me to instant tears this morning: the death of the great Alexander McQueen.

Found at his  London apartment this morning at 10 am, he was pronounced dead at the scene. With rumors are already circulating as to the nature of the tragedy, his family is courteously declining to comment, and police are still waiting on autopsy results.

Alexander McQueen was one of the most  respected and admired designers of our time. Proving time after time that creativity cannot be contained, as he shocked, awed and  inspired with each of his runway shows.  Four time British designer Of The Year, his success was completely undeniable.

“His brilliant imagination knew no bounds as he conjured up collection after collection of extraordinary designs,” Alexandra Shulman, editor of British Vogue said.  ”At one level he was a master of the fantastic, creating astounding fashion shows that mixed design, technology and performance and on another he was a modern-day genius whose gothic aesthetic was adopted by women the world over. His death is the hugest loss to anyone who knew him and for very many who didn’t.”{Guardian}

Alexander McQueen Fall 2008

For me, his inspiration is unquantifiable.  The ability to completely break down boundaries, to create beauty without limitation, while somehow achieving widespread acceptance is unbelievable.  Not only were his often outrageous designs adored by fashion lovers, but also by much of the public.  Given any of his work, one would be hard pressed to find someone who failed to see the artistry behind  his collections.  He reached the designers ultimate goal of truly blurring the lines between fashion and art, creating something of own right, of it own entity.  Something that will last an eternity.

Farewell Mr. McQueen, you will be missed.

Scientist Says

This is the most beautiful thing I’ve seen all week.

Ok it’s only Monday, but not a bad start to the week, n’est pas?

Emily Blunt in Mark Fast

You might recognize her from the Devil Wears Prada, or Sunshine Cleaning (which I haven’t seen yet – any good?), and most recently The Young Victoria. Check out her interview with the LA times here.

I don’t know much about Mark Fast (yet), but judging by this ensemble, c’est l’amour.

Science is Forever

I’ve recently been assigned a project for my Fundamentals of Design class.  We are to illustrate (using the principles of design:  line, space, colour, texture and shape)  a “sensory journey” in the form of a five panel accordion book. My wonderful teacher suggested we use inspiration from our everyday lives, such as we might experience in the grocery store, or on our daily commute to school.

I’ve decided to depict the experience of a carrot, being plucked from the earth by a rabbit, and its sequential journey through the digestive system.

Hm.

Cute Carrots

The inside of a stomach

I guess you can take the girl out of the science, but you can’t….  well you know.
